NPPA March 07 Clip Winner
Here is the picture that won me a clip contest for the month of March. It's my second clip winner since coming to Kentucky and so far my best result, winning second place!
Sports:
1st Jeri Reichanadter Indianapolis Star Boxing Girl
2nd Michael Dann Murray ledger & Times Celebration Girls Hoops
3rd Ernest Coleman Cincinnnati Enquirer Net Head
Judges agreed that the first place winner had depth beyond the obvious. Great use of of framing and a unique stand out from the others. The second place photo was a clear winner among the other celebration photos in this category, a very nice reaction moment. Third place made us laugh, nice action and a bit of luck.
March 2007
Judges: Rich Beauchesne, chair; Jackie Ricciardi, Don Clark, Deb Cram and Scott Yates of Seacoast Media Group, Portsmouth NH
Spot News:
1st Cecelia Hanley Courier & Press Emotion after Fire
2nd Marshall Gorby Springfield News-Sun 9 car pile-up
3rd Cory Morse Muskegon Chronicle Awash in Sewage
Overall, we felt this was a strong category with several great images. First place had all of the elements of a great spot news photo, from the couples grief, and the baby, the burnt shoes, all of these details making a great photo. Second place depicted amazing emotion, very clean background. It was a shame that headshots were used in the empty space of the photo (which of course wasn't any fault of the photographer's). Third place was a dramatic and emotional moment, great timing by the photographer.
General News:
1st Ben Fredman Muskegon Chronicle Little Girl at House Fire
2nd Ryan Garza The Flint Journal Murder Case Parents
3rd Bob Gwaltney Courier & Press Sons Arrival
The winners in this category stood out immediately. First place was an unanimous win by the judges, the girls expression, light, background all came together to make an amazing image. Second place stood out as a great portrait. We were drawn to the dramatic use of light, and the sorrowful feeling the photo conveyed. The third place photo was a nice moment of anticipation. We enjoyed the flag repetition in the background.

Feature Single:
1st Marshall Gorby Springfield News-Sun Portrait of a Man at Work
2nd Jason Johns Midland Daily News Backstage Hug
3rd Denny Simmons Courier & Press Young Gymnast
This category was probably the largest, many of the photos we felt would have worked better in the general news category. First place was an obvious winner, excellent juxtapostion and the humorous element. We all would have loved to have found this feature ourselves. Second place was a sweet moment caught behind the scenes, clean background made it an easy read. Third place was great way of making something out of not too much, creative use of selective focus making an interesting and fun photo.
Feature Multiple:
1st Kendra Stanley-Mills Muskegon Chronicle A Symbiotic Relationship
2nd Kendra Stanley-Mills Muskegon Chronicle Sunny Perspective-Cancer Patient
3rd Garret Cobb Bedford Times-Mail Soul Food
This category was by far the weakest. Many of the entries we felt were great ideas that could have been followed through to make more in depth stories with stronger images. First place we all agreed there were there were some nice connecting moments between subjects creating a nice package that told the story well. Second place had some strong single images that worked together nicely, more follow through would've definitely made this a stronger package. Third place was a great story idea and the images made it easy to understand.
Illustration:
1st Ryan Garza The Flint Journal Mod Dresses
2nd Marshall Gorby Springfield News-Sun Mushrooms
3rd Lisa Powell Dayton Daily News Make a Splash
First place was a great idea that was executed very well, great lighting, all elements combined nicely to get the point across. Second place winner was graphically pleasing, nice use of texture and light. Simple but very well done. Third place had two strong images that carried the package. The photographer took a creative perspective and used light well, the photos also worked well with the text. Well done!
